Marooned on the beach by the tide, thousands of starfish were dying.  Seeing their plight, a young beachcomber began picking them up, one by one, throwing them back into the water.

Watching this seemingly futile effort, an observer remarked, “There are thousands of starfish out here. You can’t possibly make a difference.”

The young man picked up another starfish and, tossing it back into the waves, said, “It made a difference to that one.”

At SCARS, this is our philosophy.  When people tell us we can’t possibly save them all, we simply tell the starfish story.   And with your help, we will continue making a difference to each and every one.

At SCARS we work to provide love, shelter, and veterinary care to abused and abandoned dogs in the eastern Kansas area.  It is our mission to find them a permanent, loving and healthy home, or temporary accommodations until a permanent home becomes avail-able.   All of our dogs are assessed and treated by a vet immediately upon arrival.  Shots are updated, and the dogs are neutered or spayed prior to joining the rest of our friends.

Take time to read the beautiful, poem, ‘Baggage’, by Evelyn Colbath, provided by the folks at the Pottawattomie County Humane Society.  This poem aptly describes the dogs taken in at SCARS, and should help adoptive families to understand their plight.
