Before and After

A Second Chance at Life

While some of our rescues come to us as a picture of health, many of our dogs are rescued from abusive situations and are in need of serious medical and emotional attention.  These are the dogs that need our help the most.  These heroes, as we like to call them, come to us fighting for their lives and fighting for a chance to rewrite their story.

Our hope for every dog we rescue is that one day they will be adopted out to loving homes. When some dogs come to us, the reality is that due to the severity of their medical and/or physical issues, rehabilitation will never be enough for us to give them new forever families.
The challenges rescues may face do not stop us from carrying out the SCARS mission and bringing special cases to SCARS.  Our 50 acre, free-roaming haven has become the forever home for some of our most special heroes.  They say when a dog reaches the end of its story, it crosses a rainbow bridge to a wide open sanctuary where they start a new journey full of love and happiness.  To our special heroes who have made SCARS their home, that Rainbow Bridge has already been crossed, giving them a second chance to live.

Below are a handful of before and after pictures of rescues we have had the privilege to love.  The most important thing we will ever do with our resources is to help dogs like these to achieve peace in this life or the next.

"Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole & strong again."

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together..
